Do you have any helpful tips on get ride of my sons pacifier / Binky / sucky ?

My son is 3 years old and sleeps with a pacifier every night, he has never not had one while hes sleeping..... I want to get ride of it to prevent teeth damage and well hes just to old for it now.... How is the best way to get ride of it? I mean i know just take it away but what did you do and how was your experience with your child taking it away? I know he will cry but how long did it last with your little one? just trying to get an ideal of what to expect.... Thanks in advance.
