Anyone know anything about Beethoven? German bloke, played the piano?

I thought I'd try some clical music, and I'm told he wrote a few decent tunes. I'm downloading nine symphonies by the Berlin Philharmonic, are they any good, or just some local band? Which one should I listen to first? Any advice appreciated, I'm trying to improve myself here....
