Can you use a game pad with Quake 4?

I have the microsoft sidewinder gamepad and need to know how to hook it up with quake 4. I have Windows XP Pro SP2, 2 Gigs of DDR2 pc4200 533Mhz Memory, (2) 250 hard drives, Radeon ATI 1600 pro 512 DDR2 AGP Video Card,700 Watt Supply unit, microsoft wireless laser 6000 keyboard/mouse. Pentium D dual core 2.80 Ghz. So will it even work?
