Heath ledger's joker......oscar?

i saw "the dark knight" today, and i'm pretty sure anyone who has seen the film walked into their respective theaters with one question: how will heath do? me, i say, he did a fantastic job. was it oscar-worthy? or is all the buzz of the second posthumous oscar possibility simply that... possible. but not likely. is this media hype, or is it recognition of pure talent?
