What are fraternities and sororities?

Every year, students die in hazing incidents. Some US states have banned all forms of hazing, others only extreme forms. Three or four days ago, a sorority was banned from the Fort Collins campus of Colorado State University. Pledges had been deprived of food and sleep, then forced to eat cat food and to perform strenuous physical activity that made one student seek medical attention.
